The funeral for Folkert Jon Bruns, of Herman, Minnesota will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris, Minnesota with Reverend Darrell Boe officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Lakeside Cemetery, Herman.
Folkert Jon Bruns, son of Ohle and Gretchen "Maggie" (Itzen) Bruns was born on June 25, 1912 in Logan Township near Herman, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at the Eden Reformed Church in Herman, where he also attended growing up. Folkert attended country school until the 8th grade, when he began farming with his father. He was united in marriage to Gladys Olhoft on September 28, 1947 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Norcross. To this union one son, Lyndon was born. The couple made their home near Herman where they farmed for many years. Folkert and Gladys opened their house up to many relatives, always welcoming them to stay for the summer. Besides farming, Folkert also did custom spraying, sold Dekalb Seed for 43 years and sold snowmobiles. If there was a chance he could get away to go fishing, he was either in the boat or in the spear house. Gladys died on December 14, 2006. Folkert continued to live on the family farm until the time of his death.
Folkert died on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris. He was 102 years old.
He is survived by one son, Lyndon (Jeanie) Bruns, Herman, MN; two grandchildren, Chad (Melody) Bruns, Herman, MN and Carey (Tyson) Giese, Osakis, MN; three great-grandchildren, Amber, Taylor and Jacey Giese, Osakis, MN; two step-grandchildren, Keith Potts, Herman, MN and Casondra Potts and many nieces and nephews. Folkert was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, John and one sister: Margaret Schultz.
