Freda Helene Brecht, daughter of Frank and Pauline (Isaak) Brecht, was born September 6, 1913 in Golden Valley, North Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Golgotha Lutheran Church in Golden Valley. Freda grew up on a ranch in Mercer County North Dakota and received her schooling in Golden Valley graduating from high school in 1932. After high school she attended the Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1936. After graduating, she worked at the Worthington hospital from 1936 to 1941. On November 10, 1940, she was united in marriage to Conrad Johnson. From this union three children were born. The couple moved to Iowa where they lived until 1948 when they moved to Morris. Freda began working as a nurse at the hospitals in Morris in 1949 and continued her employment there until her retirement in 1978. Shortly after Conrad passed away in 2000, she moved in with her daughter, Connie, and in February of 2007 she moved into the courage cottage where she lived until the time of her death.

Freda was a member of First Lutheran Church in Morris. She was also a member of the Morris Gardening Club. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, crafts and baking. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and many great nieces and nephews who considered her "grandma".

She is survived by one son: John (Michel) Johnson of Alexandria; two daughters: Connie Johnson-Schaefer of Morris, and Linda (Jim) Gay of Apex, NC; one sister: Doris Bantz of Urbandale, IA and one granddaughter: Jennifer Gay of Apex, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Conrad, three brothers and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Courage Cottage in Morris.
