Genevieve Elaine Skogstad was born in Stevens County Swan Lake Township on May 9, 1928 to George and Esther (Torgerson) Skogstad. She was baptized at Scandia Lutheran Church and grew up on the family farm north of Cyrus. Gen attended District 66 rural school for 8 years. She was confirmed at Cyrus Lutheran Church and graduated from Cyrus High School in 1946. On August 28, 1947 she married John Curtis Gunvalson. Gen and Curtis lived in Hibbing, MN for a short time where Gen worked as a waitress.

Gen had many interests outside of being a wife, mother and homemaker. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed dresses for many bridal parties as well as items for others, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also set hair and baked wedding cakes and desserts for others for special occasions. At church Gen was active in the Trinity Lutheran women's group, served as Sunday School Superintendent, Conference officer, helped organize the Godly Women's performances, crafted many things for the church bazaar and the silent auction, and helped prepare the lunch of chicken noodle soup and sloppy joes. She also helped work to remodel the church kitchen.

Later Gen enjoyed volunteering at the Cyrus School and served as a first responder. She participated in community events like the centennial and helped keep the restaurant going for the Cyrus Development Corporation. She particularly enjoyed her grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

In December of 2013 after failing health Gen moved to the Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria and then to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.

Gen passed away at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood on July 12, 2014 at the age of 86 years.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John Curtis; son Jim (Jan) of Woodbury, daughter Bev (Tom) of Brooklyn Park, brother Donald (Joyce) Skogstad of Fergus Falls, 4 grandchildren; Kristen (Ryan) Butler of Woodbury, Scott (Ellen) Alsleben of Minneapolis, Ryan (Jeannie) Gunvalson of Woodbury, Leah (Rhett) Nelson of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, nine great-grandchildren – Reece, Lincoln, Noelle, Emory, Bennett, Walter, Claire, Declan, Nora and several nieces and nephews.
