The memorial service for George A. Discher Jr., of Hawick, Minnesota, formerly of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fron Lutheran Church at Starbuck, with Reverend Sarah Taylor officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Burial will be at the Fron Cemetery, near Starbuck.
George August Discher Jr., son of George and Anna (Schoelkoph) Discher was born on November 12, 1914 at Redwood Falls, Minnesota, where he grew up and attended school. He entered the United States Army, serving his country for 5 years during World War II and the Korean War and retired from the military with an honorable discharge. George returned to Minnesota and attended Barber School in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to Lola Arterburn on June 5, 1952. The couple lived in Minneapolis where George was a barber until 1957, when they moved to Starbuck and George began Discher's Barber Shop. He owned and operated the shop for 19 years before retiring in 1976. The couple continued to live in Starbuck in the winters and on the lake in summer months. Lola died on December 25, 1994. George continued to live in Starbuck until 2005, when he moved to Hawick to live with his son and daughter-in-law.
George was a member of the Fron Lutheran Church. He was very active in Starbuck as a Cub Scout Leader, serving on the city council, was a life member of the V.F.W. and drove school bus for several years. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing.
George died on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He was 96 years old.
He is survived by his son, John Discher and his wife, Jean, Hawick; one granddaughter, Michelle Discher, Sauk Centre; one great-grandson, Ty Discher, Sauk Centre; a sister-in-law, Irene Discher, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers, Clarence "Granny", and Robert, and three sisters, Laura Behrendt, Margaret Humphrey and Emma Matson.
Honorary pallbearers are George's nephews. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
