Gertrude Albertina Sandvig, daughter of Ole and Anna (Raaum) Sandvig, was born November 8, 1912 in New Prairie Township in Pope County, Minnesota, where she was baptized at St. Petri Church and confirmed at Nora Church. Gertrude was only six years old when her mother passed away. She attended Country School through the 6th grade. Following her schooling, she began working for neighbors doing housework and helping care for their children.
On April 1, 1933, Gertrude married Edward Mithun at the parsonage in Starbuck by Pastor Johnshoy. The couple made their home on a small farm in New Prairie Township and later moved to their home in Cyrus, where they raised their five children. Edward died on June 20, 1981. Gertrude continued to live in Cyrus until 2002, when she moved to the West Wind Village in Morris.
Gertrude was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. She enjoyed sewing, especially pretty dresses for her girls, many of them from flour sacks and embroidering dish towels. She enjoyed her strawberry patch and took pride in her spotless home and her sparkling white clothes. Gertrude liked to cook and bake, especially lefse, homemade bread and date filled cookies. She loved visits from her family, especially her grandkids and great grandkids.
Gertrude died on November 6, 2006 at West Wind Village in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 93 years.
She is survived by her children: Allen (DiAnn) Mithun of Cyrus, Diane (David) Boettcher of Morris and Michael (Laura) of Cyrus; 13 grandchildren: Debra (Bob) Dahlseng, Laurie (Rod) Johnson, Steve (Ann) Mullins, Dean (Pam) Mithun, Sheila Mithun, Sherri (Mace) Okeson, Gail (Rick) Stoneburg, Renee (Duane) Montbriand, Brian (Kim) Mithun, Bruce Mithun, Paul (Tanya) Boettcher, Todd (Tracy) Boettcher and Darrin (Katie) Mithun; 20 great-grandchildren: Greg, Missy, Kayla, Renee, Blake, Katelyn, Zach, Morgan, Jayden, Mandi, Jake, Bandi, Bonnie, Samantha, Ashley, Joey, Justin, Mady, Luke and Wyatt; two great-great-grandchildren: Kyla and Camden and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son: Ernest and wife, Shirley, one daughter: Lila and husband, John Mullins; one great-grandson: Michael Johnson; her parents; five sisters: Cora Johnson, Edna Mithun, Olga Mithun, Inga Mithun and Ida Ronnie; three brothers: Edward (Infant) and Otto and Edward Sandvig and a foster child: Bernie Alberg.
Pallbearers for the service are Gertrude's grandsons: Steve Mullins, Dean Mithun, Brian Mithun, Bruce Mithun, Paul Boettcher, Todd Boettcher, Darrin Mithun. Honorary pallbearers are Gertrude's granddaughters: Deb Dahlseng, Gail Stoneburg, Laurie Johnson, Renee Montbriand, Sheila Mithun and Sherri Okeson. Gorden Thompson will serve as organist for the service with Sheryle Dahl serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
