Glen Donald Vorland, son of Helge and Louise (Thompson) Vorland, was born June 27, 1925 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, where he grew up and was baptized and confirmed at Eagle Grove Lutheran Church. He graduated from Vernon High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United States Army that fall. Glen was a medic in the Army and was stationed in England and Germany during World War II. Glen was honorably discharged in 1946. On November 30, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mavis Johnson at Lake Lutheran Church in Goldfield, Iowa. They moved to a farm north of Chokio in March of 1947, where Glen worked as a farmer and carpenter until they moved into Chokio in June of 1996.
Faith was important to Glen who was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where he served many years on the Church Council. He was also a member of the Morris VFW, Chokio Legion, and the Morris B-Squares square dancing group. Glen enjoyed camping, and anything fun. He had a serious but fun sense of humor and enjoyed showing up unannounced at his brother's houses in Iowa with five kids. He also loved buying gifts for Mavis, that she did not necessarily want, which included a motorcycle and snowmobile. Glen loved spending time with his kids and grandchildren. He was well known as a surrogate grandfather to many children in the community. Glen and Mavis enjoyed attending events their children and grandchildren participated in.
Glen is survived by his wife, Mavis Vorland of Chokio; five children, Janice Roers of Waseca, Wayne (Cindy) Vorland of Ashby, Jean (Bill) Purus of Helena, MT, Galen (Sheila) Vorland of Minneapolis, and Vickie (Rollie) Frothinger of Garrison, ND; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard (Virginia) Vorland of Clear Lake, IA and Kenneth (Marlene) Vorland of Hardy, IA; sisters-in-law, Shirley Vorland of Northwood, IA and Marjorie Vorland of Hardy, IA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher Frothinger; son-in-law, Robert Roers; sister, Pearl (James) McClamrock; five brothers, Nels (Helen) Vorland, Herman Vorland, Howard Vorland, Edmund (Alice) Vorland and Eugene Vorland.
