Gloria May Chalmers, daughter of Harry and Athey (Pepperdine) Chalmers, was born January 5, 1923 in Ottawa, Kansas. While growing up, Gloria's family moved several times. Because of that, she lived and received her education in Ottawa, KS, then Atlanta, GA, before returning to Ottawa, KS for a time and eventually moving to Herington, KS. While living in Herington, she met Edward H. Buntje, who was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. The couple was united in marriage on December 12, 1942 by Reverend Hughes at the First Methodist Church in Herington. After Ed was discharged from the service in 1945, the couple moved to Donnelly, MN, where they lived for a short time before settling in Morris, MN. On October 23, 1948, Gloria was baptized into the Lutheran Faith by Pastor Duhlmeier at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS) in Morris.
Gloria worked several years as a telephone operator in Donnelly and Morris. Not only did she love her work, but she always cherished the friends she made over the years. Gloria was also an active member of the St. Paul's Church Choir and enjoyed being a member of the Morris V.F.W. Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. One of her greatest joys in life was planning and doing "fun" activities with her family. Family loved her pies and looked forward to her preserves and canning treasures.
Edward died on November 19, 1999, and following his death, Gloria continued to live in Morris for a few years. She has spent the last eight years as a resident of the Divine Providence Health Center in Ivanhoe, MN, where she truly enjoyed the loving care she received from the entire staff.
Gloria died on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Divine Providence Health Center in Ivanhoe, MN, twelve years to the day after her beloved husband, Edward passed away. She had lived to reach the age of 88 years.
She is survived by two children: Beverly (Rodney) Wilson of Ivanhoe, MN and Edward (Rita) Buntje of Edina, MN; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister: Minnie Atkinson of McPherson, KS and a sister-in-law: Gladys Hadler of Inver Grove Heights, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother: Karl and his wife, Ruth Chalmers; two sisters: Dorothy and her husband, Thomas Scritchfield and Virginia and her two husbands, Jack Yandell and Cliff Post and a brother-in-law: Charles Atkinson.
