Gordon Hagestuen

The memorial service for Gordon John Hagestuen, of Starbuck, will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 9, at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Reverend Paul Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Starbuck Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at Fron Lutheran Cemetery in Starbuck.

Gordon John Hagestuen, son of Clarence and Alida (Flodin) Hagestuen, was born on August 5, 1927 in Starbuck, Minnesota. He was baptized by Reverend Bieto at the Rolling Forks Lutheran Church, in rural Starbuck. Gordon grew up in the Starbuck area, graduating from Starbuck High School. In 1945, he entered the United States Navy and served his country until 1946 when was honorably discharged. Gordon was united in marriage to Lois Jane Danielson on September 17, 1949, by Reverend Ulring at Saint Paul Church in Lowry, Minnesota. The couple farmed until 1971, when Gordon began working in construction. In 1977, Gordon purchased a gas station in Starbuck and later opened Gordy's Cafe and built the Cedar Inn. He ran the three operations until the time of his retirement in 1991. After his retirement, he worked various part-time jobs, including the local NAPA store.

Gordon was a member of the Fron Lutheran Church and a lifelong member of the Starbuck VFW. His hobbies included cribbage, playing cards, tending to his flower garden, and spending time with his coffee buddies. During his years of retirement, he enjoyed baking treats for friends and family. He spent much time with his faithful friend and companion, Gladys Sather. They were very close and it was as if her children became his. Gordon was well known for his classic stories and jokes and he enjoyed cheering on the Twins and the Vikings.

Gordon died at age 84 on Friday, August 5, 2011, at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.

He is survived by one son, Bruce (Julie), of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; two daughters, Linda (Mike) Ogg, of Wausau, Wisc., and Barbara (Jon) Davis, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Darlene Hagestuen, of Starbuck; a brother-in-law, Tom Danielson, of Bloomington, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one infant sister.
