Gregory Starns

Funeral services for Gregory Starns of Starbuck will be held Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Reverend Sarah Taylor will be officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Gregory John Starns, son of John and Marian (Walskog) Starns, was born June 2, 1949 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in North St. Paul. Greg graduated from North St. Paul High School in 1967. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, Morris, graduating in 1971. On May 22, 1971, he was united in marriage to Bobbie Bjerke. In the fall of 1971, Greg began teaching and coaching at Cyrus, Minnesota. Greg and Bobbie later moved to Starbuck, where Greg began teaching and coaching at the Starbuck High School and then at Minnewaska High School. While coaching at Minnewaska, his basketball team won the section championship in 1992 and the opportunity to play in the Minnesota State High School Basketball Tournament. Greg retired from teaching and coaching in 2005. He and Bobbie have remained in Starbuck since that time.

Greg enjoyed coaching basketball, especially on Saturday morning with the Starbuck youngsters. In 2006, he was inducted into the Minnesota Basketball Coaches High School Hall of Fame. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter.

Greg died on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, MN, having lived to reach the age of 61 years.

He is survived by his wife: Bobbie Starns of Starbuck; two sons: Todd Starns of Starbuck and Ben (Katie) Starns of Maple Grove; one granddaughter: Cora Jayne Starns; two brothers: Gordy Starns of Florida and Gary Starns of the Twin Cities; one sister: Becky (Keith) Engdahl of St. Croix Falls, WI; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dogs: Charlie and Tootsie. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Serving as pallbearers for the service are all of Grega�(TM)s former basketball players that he coached through the years. Shari Opdahl will serve as organist for the service with Brent Johnson serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
