The memorial service for Harley Grantham of Morris, Minnesota will be held Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Federated Church in Morris, with Reverend Jennifer Amy-Dressler officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday. Burial will be at the Summit Cemetery, Morris.
Harley Homer Grantham, son of Frederick and Jessica (Schultz) Grantham, was born June 30, 1922 in Danbury, Iowa. He grew up in Northwestern Iowa and graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School, at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa in 1941. Harley attended college at Morningside University in Iowa, before being called to active duty with the United States Army in May of 1943. He served his country during World War II, serving overseas, until being honorably discharged in January of 1946. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and two Bronze Stars for his duties. Harley returned to Morningside University, where he graduated in 1948 with a teaching degree. He started his teaching career in Alden, Iowa, where he taught high school and coached basketball for both boys and girls. Harley was united in marriage to Ruth M. Allen on June 7, 1950. In 1952, the couple moved to Hibbing, Minnesota, where Harley worked for the Star Tribune. He received his master's degree from Bemidji State University in 1968; that fall the family moved to Morris, where Harley was the guidance counselor at Morris High School. In 1980, he took the guidance counselor position at Waubun High School at Waubun, Minnesota, before retiring in 1984. Ruth died on April 2, 2004. Harley became a resident at the West Wind Village in Morris in September of 2004.
Harley was a member of the Federated Church and the American Legion in Morris. He enjoyed fishing, camping, collecting antiques and working flea markets. He was a "Big" Morningside Football fan, and loved going to the Itasca State Park.
Harley died on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the West Wind Village in Morris. He was 89 years old.
He is survived by two sons, Harley (Kathy) Grantham Jr., Coon Rapids, MN and Allen Grantham, Cottage Grove, MN. Harley was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, parents, Frederick and Jessica, and one brother, Cecil.
