Funeral services for Harriet Rice of Morris will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris, MN, with Reverend Dell Sanderson officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 7 at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery in Morris.
Harriet Alice Nelson, daughter of Linus and Anna (Olson) Nelson was born April 13, 1919 at Powers Hospital in Barrett, Minnesota. She was baptized on July 5, 1919 at First Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake and confirmed on July 22, 1934. She attended District #4 rural school and graduated from Elbow Lake High School in 1936. Harriet continued her education in 1937 at Teacher's Training in Alexandria. After graduating she taught rural school for eight years in Grant County.
Harriet was united in marriage to Herbert B. Rice of Odin, Minnesota, on January 5, 1940. She was a longtime active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. Harriet had been employed by Stark's Grocery, Holiday Café and Sunwood Inn in Morris; and for a number of years, Harriet provided child care for several families in Morris, retiring in 1995. Herbert died on August 1, 1978. Harriet continued to live in Morris before becoming a resident at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck in 2005.
Some of Harriet's past times were embroidery, quilting, canning, baking and reading. She sang with the Choraliers and volunteered with the Widowed Persons Service.
Harriet died on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 92 years.
She is survived by two sons: Bradley (Lori) Rice of Aberdeen, SD and Terry (Donna) Rice of Willmar; two daughters: Dawn (Lloyd) Larson of North Mankato and Debra (Kim) Borck of Audubon; grandchildren: Amanda (Matthew) Larson, Jessica Rice, Carrie and Adam Larson, Ahna, Lydia, Elise, Daniel and Mari Borck; great-grandson: Parker Larson and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers and spouses: Vernon (Lillian) Nelson, Clifford (Lillie) Nelson, Waldo (Ann) Nelson and Lester Nelson; sisters and spouses: Edith (Rhody) Henrichs, Myrtle (Walter) Biss, Mildred (Lloyd) Gulbrandson, and Florence (Harold) Podratz.
Memorials may be given in memory of Harriet to the Faith Lutheran Church to be used in the Memorial Garden.
