Hazel Katherine Koons, daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Sangel) Koons, was born March 14, 1917 in Jackson County, Minnesota. Following High School, Hazel attended business school and also the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris. Following her schooling, she enlisted in the United States Navy on May 14, 1943, where she served in World War II. She received an honorable discharge on November 4, 1945. Following her discharge Hazel lived in the Brainerd area, where she worked as a cook. The last 3A½ years she had been a resident of the Woodland Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Brainerd. Hazel will be dearly missed by all who knew and love her.
Hazel died on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at the Woodland Good Samaritan Home in Brainerd, having lived to reach the age of 90 years, 5 months, 15 days.
She is survived by four sisters: Virginia Lawrence of Grove City; Marian (Robert) Scribner of Mankato, Gladys Traphagan of Kimball and Ada Koons of Brainerd; sister-in-law: Elsie Koons of Gallitan, TN and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents: Jacob and Katherine Koons; three sisters: Clara Henricks, Anna Scribner and Mabel Riedel and six brothers: Alvin Koons, John Koons, Edward Koons, George Koons, Harvey Koons and infant Carl Koons.
Pallbearers for the service are Hazel's nephews: Lawrence Schmidt, Marvin Henricks, Jr., Eugene Scribner, Ronald Scribner, Christopher Lawrence, Glen Koons and James Henricks. Irma Brockberg will serve as organist with Jessica Klimek serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
