Helen Caroline Rust, daughter of Edward and Petra (Lande) Rust was born on November 18, 1915, at the family farm near Galesburg, ND. She attended country school through grade 8 and received her high school education in Galesburg, graduating in 1933. She was a graduate of Mayville State Teacher's College and taught at a number of smaller schools in North Dakota, mostly one room, including Lincoln Valley near Goodrich, the Port school near Page, Dover Consolidated near Wimbledon and the school in Whitman.
Helen assumed the role of homemaker upon her marriage to Clayton Ahrlin June 28, 1940 at Elm River Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Clayton's career in education took them to upper Michigan for two years and back to North Dakota in the communities of Portland, Galesburg and Grandin. They retired to the family farm near Galesburg, where they resided until their move to Morris in 2002. Clayton died on November 18, 2003.
Helen was a life-long member of Elm River Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed. She was an active participant in her church, especially with Ladies Aid, Sunday school and Mary Circle. Helen was the type who preferred working quietly behind the scenes. She was a true servant, putting the welfare of others ahead of her own.
Her talents included playing piano, artistic drawing and writing. Helen's number one interest was her family. She worked tirelessly to provide a loving and secure home life. She was also a great cook, providing a feast at every meal.
Helen and Clayton, her husband of 62 years, were inseparable and dedicated to each other. Together they provided a stream of happy memories their family will cherish always.
