Obituary for Henning Awsumb
Funeral services for Henning Awsumb of Donnelly, Minnesota will be held Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, rural Donnelly. Reverend Judy Gelinske will be officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Kongsvinger Lutheran Cemetery, rural Donnelly.
Henning Orla Awsumb, son of Peter and Marie (Larson) Awsumb, was born on July 2, 1925 in Donnelly Township, Minnesota. He was baptized on July 19, 1925 and later confirmed at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church. Henning grew up in the Donnelly area and attended country school through the 8th grade. Following his schooling, Henning helped his dad on the family farm and also worked for area farmers. On February 17, 1945 Henning entered the Armed Service. He performed duty in the Pacific Theatre Operation as a member of Company C 110th engineer Combat Battalion on Okinawa and Korea. He received an honorable discharge on December 13, 1946. On June 16, 1956, Henning was united in marriage to Darlene Carlin. In 1963, the couple purchased a farm near Donnelly, where they raised three children, farmed and ran a dairy operation. Over the years, Henning and Darlene enjoyed traveling to Norway, Nova Scotia, the Canadian Rockies, New York and Washington, DC. Darlene died on August 8, 2011. Henning continued to be active on the farm until the time of his death.
Henning was a lifelong member of Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, where he sang with the Men's Quartet and belonged to the Men's Club. He was also a member of the Morris American Legion, VFW, Sons of Norway, Moose Island Uff Da's, Donnelly Horseshoe league and the Donnelly Rod and Gun Club. Henning played softball for many years after he was married and eventually coached the Donnelly Red Sox Baseball Team while his sons were playing. Henning enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, attending their activities and being their biggest fans. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and making Scandinavian treats.
Henning died on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at West Wind Village in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 87 years.
He is survived by three children: Craig Awsumb of Donnelly, Patricia (Mark) Smith of Donnelly and Peter (Dawn) Awsumb of Columbia Heights; five grandchildren: Zachary Awsumb of Winona, Kelsey Awsumb of Mankato, Bennett Smith of Minneapolis, Carter Smith of Vermillion, SD and MaKenzie Smith of Donnelly. Three sisters: Gertrude Brandt of Long Beach, Vivian Fahey of Brooklyn Park and Donna (Ted) Yochim of Sisseton, SD; three sisters-in-law: Lorraine Awsumb of Morris, JoAnn (Tom) Jacobson of Morton and Joyce Carlin of Pahrump, NV; brother-in-law: Edward (Beverly) Carlin of Sandstone and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents and one brother: Torgney Awsumb.
Pallbearers for the service are Zachary Awsumb, Kelsey Awsumb, Bennett Smith, Carter Smith, MaKenzie smith and Scott Yochim. Sue Erdahl-Nelson will serve as organist for the service.
