Hilda Martha Schliep, daughter of Herman and Emma (Thielke) Schliep, was born February 26, 1905 in Hancock, Minnesota, where she was baptized on April 9, 1905 and confirmed on June 8, 1919 at St. John?s Lutheran Church. She attended school in Hancock and Alexandria and eventually attended one year at the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris. On December 24, 1925, she was united in marriage to Walter Carl Poppe in Alexandria, MN. The couple moved to Makoti, North Dakota, where they lived on a farm for the first years of their married life. They moved back to Minnesota in 1939 and farmed in the Stevens County area and raised their three children. Hilda and Walter were married 54 years. Walter died on February 25, 1979.
Hilda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and was very active with the Women of Zion. She was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries for 69 years. She also belonged to the Board of Aging, Site Council, Horton Township Homemakers and was a 4-H Club leader. Hilda loved to play cards and she especially enjoyed the time she spent with her family.
Hilda died on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at West Wind Village in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 102 years.
She is survived by one daughter: Donna Nibbe of Willmar; two sons: Donald (Marj) Poppe of Morris and James (Chieko) Poppe of Vancouver, WA; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; five sisters and four brothers.
Pallbearers for the service are: Steven Poppe, David Poppe, Uriah Nibbe, William Nibbe, Robert Nibbe and James Nibbe. Dorothy Maus will serve as organist for the service. Courtney and Leah Nibbe will serve as violinists.
