Irene Faye Kill, daughter of Charles and Florence (Smith) Sperr, was born May 27, 1923, at home north of Donnelly. Irene was the second oldest in a family of nine girls and three boys. She attended country school in Donnelly Township and graduated from Alberta High School in 1941.
She was united in marriage to Herb Kill on November 18, 1941, and they were blessed with 69 years of marriage. Together they raised livestock and farmed for more than 50 years. They lived on a farm north of Morris until 1976 when they built a home in Morris. In addition to farm work, Irene raised chickens, sold eggs, made cakes for weddings and other special occasions, worked as a cook at a retirement home and most recently altered clothing. Irene participated in 4-H club, Homemakers Club and St. Theresa's Mission Club. She loved making things: whether it was gardening, cooking, baking, canning, sewing or quilting she was very good at it all.
Her family was very important to her; she always loved being a homemaker and a mother. Irene was known for her good cooking and delicious desserts. Family often jokes that no one can copy her meals or desserts because she rarely stuck to the recipe. If asked she would say it has a little bit of this and a little bit of that. She loved sharing her talents with family by making many handmade gifts.
Irene's genuine smile and contagious laugh were a true joy for those who knew her just a day or for a lifetime. She was thoughtful, and made everyone feel special in a kind and gentle way.
Having lived to the age of 88, Irene died at home on Tuesday, October 11, just six months after her husband Herb. She was surrounded by the family that was so dear to her.
Irene is survived by her four children: Lois Leavitt (Jim Williams) of Blaine, Ed (Colleen) Kill of Monticello, Wally (Diane) Kill of Morris, Cindy (Paul) Wannarka of Bemidji: 10 grandchildren: Adam Leavitt, Dustin (Lisa) Leavitt, Erik Leavitt, Stacie (Tony) Paetznick, Katie (CJ) Hunter, Brandon (Charissa) Kill, Tara (Kurtis) Pool, Matthew Kill, Weston Wannarka, Courtney Wannarka: and 11 great grand children. She is also survived by nine brothers and sisters: Lucille Jenrich, Ralph (Bertie) Sperr, Clinton (Vera) Sperr, June Hoover, Charlotte (Hank) Atzmiller, Joyce Gerstner, Elwood (Marcella) Sperr, Mildred Himes and Phyllis Tondelli and two sister-in-laws: Betty Pollard and Catherine Clausen and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and two sisters: Fern Smith and Vera Sperr.
