The funeral for Irene Elaine Nelson, of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Minnewaska Lutheran Church in Starbuck, with Reverend Todd Klemme officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Minnewaska Lutheran Cemetery, Starbuck.
Irene Elaine Olson, daughter of Oliver and Dora (Little) Olson was born on August 26, 1930 in Glenwood, Minnesota, where she grew up and attended school. She was united in marriage to Luther Nelson on August 18, 1947 in Glenwood. The couple made their home in Starbuck, where they raised their three boys. Over the years Irene worked for the Starbuck Elementary School and also the Minnewaska Day Treatment Program School. Luther died on April 1, 2001. Irene continued to make her home in Starbuck and in December of 2014 moved into the Minnewaska Lutheran Home.
She was an active member of the Minnewaska Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and a member of the ladies aid. Irene was also a member of the Starbuck V.F.W. She enjoyed bowling and listening to music. Irene loved to cook and bake, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Irene died on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. She was 84 years old.
She is survived by two sons, Gerald (Ruth Ann) Nelson, Starbuck, MN and Michael (Amy) Nelson, Breezy Point, MN; one daughter-in-law, Becky Nelson, Alexandria; one brother, Warren (Marlys) Olson, Evansville, MN and one sister, Donna (Robert) Billehus, Anoka, MN; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Robert "Bob" Nelson, her parents, and two brothers Dean Olson and Jerry Olson.
