Memorial services for Irene Riedner of Alberta, Minnesota will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, MN. Father Tim Baltes will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Morris.
Irene Marie Grotjohn, daughter of Albert and Edith (Fangmeier) Grotjohn, was born November 27, 1927 in Morris, Minnesota, where she grew up and was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church. In the 1970's, Irene was confirmed into the Catholic Faith along with her son Dave. Irene attended and graduated from Morris High School in 1945. Following her graduation, she worked various jobs in the area. On October 9, 1952, she was united in marriage to Michael Riedner. The couple made their home in Garrison, Minnesota for a short time, before returning to Morris. In 1971, they moved to Alberta, where they purchased Mike's Bar, which they owned and operated until 1981, when they retired. Irene and Mike continued to live in Alberta. Mike died on December 4, 2004 and Irene has remained in Alberta since that time.
Irene was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris and the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. Irene was a great cook. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, making lap blankets for veterans, playing bingo and taking trips to the Casino. Irene especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Irene died on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Courage Cottage in Morris, MN. She lived to reach the age of 83 years.
She is survived by: two sons: Bruce Riedner (Patti Nelson) of Morris and David (Joan) Riedner of Herman; three grandchildren: Broc Riedner of Fridley, Elysia (Derek) Woodke of Hoffman and Christy (Blake) Christopherson of Melrose; three great-grandchildren: Braxton Christopherson, Britney and Brady Woodke; four siblings: Paul (Elaine) Grotjohn of Morris, Joanne Schonauer of Velva, ND, Richard Grotjohn of Jackson and Judy (Jerry) Washek of Battle Lake; three sisters-in-law: Mary Grotjohn of Baxter, Carol Grotjohn of Breckenridge and Glen Kelly of Libby, MT. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and three brothers: Miles, Earl and Robert Grotjohn.
Pallbearers for the service are all of Irene's family and friends. Marilyn Backman will serve as pianist/song leader for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
