The funeral for James "Jim" Erickson, of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, with Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Burial will be at the Fron Lutheran Cemetery, Starbuck.
James Alexander Erickson, son of William and Constance (Nygaard) Erickson was born on June 28, 1923 near Starbuck, Minnesota. He graduated from Starbuck High School in 1941, where he was active playing the saxophone in the band, and was a member of the basketball and football teams. Jim attended WSCA in Morris, Minnesota one year before entering the United States Army in 1943, serving his country during World War II. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to Minnesota. Jim was united in marriage to Edith Durkee on June 28, 1947 at the Congregational Church in Hancock, Minnesota. The couple lived and farmed 2 miles west of Starbuck, where they raised their 4 children. Jim also drove school bus for Starbuck Public Schools for 22 years and cattle truck for Walt Amundson. Edith died on January 30, 2010. Jim continued to live near Starbuck before entering the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in February of 2014.
He was a member of the Fron Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He was also manager of the Starbuck Shipping Association; and served on the township board and school board. He enjoyed playing pinochle, riding snowmobile, dancing, and watching his grandchildren play sports. With a true Norwegian Heritage, Jim liked lutefisk and lefse. He loved to have a cup of coffee, socialize and tell a joke, but most of all he loved being around his family.
Jim died on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. He was 90 years old.
He is survived by two sons, Ted DDS (Jamie) Erickson, Fairbault and Charles MD (Karla) Erickson, Ramsey; two daughters, Pat Anderson, Bloomington and Gail (Tom) Elbe, Starbuck; nine grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two grandsons, Matthew James Elbe and Kade Erickson, a sister and brother-in-law, Pearl (Rolland) Hoberg, a son-in-law, Les Anderson and one daughter-in-law, Kathy (Rollie) Erickson.
