Funeral services for James "Jim" Griffith of Morris, MN will be held Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, with Father Todd Schneider officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Morris.
James Robert Griffith, son of Leo and Irene (Mahoney) Griffith, was born August 30, 1920 in Graceville, Minnesota, where he grew up and began his schooling at St. Mary's Catholic School until the 5th grade, when he went to the Graceville Public School, graduating in 1939. Following his schooling, Jim continued to work at Griffith Implement with his dad until 1943, when he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was in several battles on the South Pacific and survived the sinking of the USS Luce. Jim received an honorable discharge in 1946. On June 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marguerite Moe at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. To this union nine children were born. The couple made their home in Graceville, where Jim worked at Griffith Implement and was also a volunteer firefighter. In January, 1950, they moved SE of Morris and began farming until 2012 when he moved to West Wind Village.
Jim was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris and a former member of the Morris American Legion and V.F.W. He was a hard worker and always found something to do around the farm. He loved to visit with his family and friends.
Jim died on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the age of 95 at West Wind Village in Morris.
He is survived by his wife: Marguerite Griffith of Morris; four sons: Rob (Rose) Griffith of Coon Rapids, Dan (Evelyn) Griffith of Morris, Bill (Deb) Griffith of Graceville and Joe (Julie) Griffith of Bird Island; four daughters: Connie (Ken) Wohlers of Wendell, Nellie (Jim) Kern of Garland, TX, Sandy Griffith Nellen of Hamburg and Renee (Dan) Devereaux of Minneapolis; one sister: Helen Griffith of St. Paul; two sisters-in-law: Claudia Griffith of Auburn, WA and Ivern (Larry) Rubida of Puyllup, WA; 23 grandchildren; 40+ great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son: Pat Griffith; one great-grandson: Blake Griffith; his parents; three brothers: Tom, Mike and Roger Griffith and one son-in-law: Butch Nellen.
