Jerry Lloyd Schultz was born to Lloyd and Eva “Joann” (Larson) Schultz on January 6, 1953 in Fairmont, Minnesota. He was one of three children that would grow up on the family farm south of Belgrade. At the age of six Jerry started attending school in Worthington, where he would complete his schooling after the tenth grade. During his school years, Jerry loved coming home to visit his family during the holidays and summer, and attending Camp Courage near Maple Lake.
Throughout his life, Jerry was always an animal lover. While attending school in Worthington, one of Jerry’s teachers gifted him a kitten, who he lovingly cared for – even when visiting his family back in Belgrade. As an adult Jerry got the opportunity to take a trip to Colorado to work with horses. His friend, who had become disabled during the Vietnam War, taught him everything he knew during his extended stay. And Jerry, in turn, brought his new found love and knowledge home to Minnesota to share with his friends and family. The same friend invited Jerry to Washington DC to watch him accept an award at the White House, Jerry happily obliged. Jerry had a way of making friends, especially ones that could take him on adventures. During the nearly forty years he lived in Mankato, Jerry made friends with a pilot who frequently flew him from Mankato to Morris. He also had a way of getting in with celebrities, having the privilege of meeting a couple of his favorites – Willie Nelson and the Oak Ridge Boys, among others.
While Jerry spent most of his adulthood in Mankato, he spent the last few years living first in Dawson, and then in Montevideo. During his life he also enjoyed working occasionally, especially in the packaging department at Chippewa Enterprises. Recently Jerry’s health started to fail and he was put on hospice. Despite his decline, he was able to celebrate his 70th birthday surrounded by relatives and friends. On January 16, 2023, Jerry passed away at his residence in Montevideo. He will always be lovingly remembered for his affection for his family, friends, and animals.
Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Donna (Mike) Berlinger of Chokio; nieces: Alisa (Tim) Rustand of Elizabeth, MN, Anna (Justin) Anderson of West Fargo, ND, Melissa (Craig) Ritter of Dawson, MN, Emily (Jeremy) Bring of West Fargo, ND; nephew, Steven (Jenna) Berlinger of Dilworth, MN; great-nieces and nephews: Tim, Eva, Tyler, and Taylor Rustand, Lyla Anderson, Kailey, Chylar, and Natyah Ritter, Madi and Kai Berlinger, Sophia and Hayden Bring. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Joann; and brother, James.
