Joan Elizabeth Bartell was born on December 9, 1927 in Grant County, MN to William and Jennie Bartell. Joan attended grade school in Traverse County District #21 and Grant County District #46. She graduated from Herman High School and graduated from Wheaton Teachers Training. She taught school for 2 years in District #69. On June 16, 1948, she married Paul Bruns. She taught for 3 more years and then took time off to raise her children, Jerry, Bill, Sheila and Wanda. When her children were all in school she accepted a position teaching at the Big Stone Hutterite Colony. She taught for 16 years and retired from teaching only to take a position at the Ravenwood Group Home. She was employed by Prairie Community Services for 15 years and received the Employee of the Year Award. She worked for 1 more year and had to retire because of her health, at the age of 80.

In July 1955, she committed her life to Christ and was later baptized by immersion. She worked hard on the farm. She raised chickens and sold eggs, and sewed for people. She always enjoyed her flowers and vegetable garden, preserving fruit and vegetables for the long Minnesota winters. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking, baking and always brought more than her share for potluck to make sure there was always enough food. In July of 2011, Paul and Joan left the farm and moved into West Central Homes. Because of her need to keep busy, she started baking and selling her baked goods to the other tenants.

Joan loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She made the statement that she wanted to be the best grandma and great-grandma that any child could have. She loved following their sporting events and making rolls and buns, and chocolate chip cookies. Every child (and adult) knew where the cookie jar was and it was always full.

Joan is survived by her husband Paul Bruns of Morris; sons, Jerry (Kathy) Bruns of Morris and Bill (Teresa) Bruns of Solway; daughters, Sheila (Keith) Kaehler of Morris and Wanda Ross of Winnipeg, Manatoba. She has 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Also surviving her is her sister, Sylvia (Robert) Fridgen of Minneapolis; sisters-in-law, Gail Bartell of Wheaton and Ruth Reano of Des Moines, IA and brother-in-law Dale Bruns of Morris and many nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, William and Jenny Bartell; in-laws, Fred and Gladys Bruns; brother, Ken Bartell; sister and brothers-in-law, Betty and Gordon Thorstad and Richard Reano; son-in-law, Alvin Ross and three nephews and one niece.

Her favorite scripture was:
Romans 10; 9-10
"If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto Salvation."

Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
