A Memorial Gathering for John Ehlers of Morris will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. with a prayer service at 2:00 at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris.
John O. Ehlers, son of John and Olina (Ostrom) Ehlers was born on August 1, 1919 at Douglas, North Dakota, where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1937, and moved with his family to a farm near Elbow Lake, Minnesota. John was united in marriage to Dagny Elizabeth Sageng on December 7, 1939. The couple made their home on a farm near Barrett, Minnesota. After farming for many years, John made a significant career change and became an owner and chef of a restaurant in Barrett. Dagny died on December 26, 1968. John operated the restaurant until 1970, when he moved to Minot, North Dakota and continued his career in the restaurant and food operation industry. John returned to Minnesota, where he lived in Morris and was active in sales and marketing; helping his son with his business in amusement park attractions. In his later years, John was active in auto sales.
In his younger years, John was a member of the Barrett Rifle Club, Erdahl Elks 4-H Club and enjoyed fishing and hunting. In his later years, he was a member of First Lutheran Church at Morris and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with his family.
John died on December 14, 2010 at the Lakeview Good Samaritan Center in Glenwood, Minnesota. He was 91 years old.
He is survived by two sons, Peter J. (Cheryl) Ehlers, Rowley, MA and Steve P. Ehlers, Burbank, CA; one daughter, Kathy E. Nigro, Morris, MN; one brother, Arnold (Doris) Ehlers, Elbow Lake, MN; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Banken, his parents, four brothers, Nevin "Pete", Jack, Louis and Marvin, and two sisters, Helen and Violet.
