John Walter Harvestine, age 72, of rural Hancock, Minnesota, died suddenly at his home September 13, 2016 due to complications of cancer and congestive heart failure.
John was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 26, 1944 to George and Mildred Harvestine. He grew up in Cicero, Illinois with three siblings and graduated from Morton East High School in 1962. He joined the United States Army and proudly served from 1963 until 1969 during the Vietnam era.
He pursued various careers in finance and maintenance supervision. He particularly enjoyed being a credit manager for Alden's catalog company in Chicago and work flow coordinator for maintenance at the Cross Plains, Wisconsin site of Lands' End catalog company. John married Jackie in 1984. In the 80's they owned a propane gas business. They lived for many years on a Wisconsin acreage where he took great pride in tending and keeping a beautiful yard, garden and flowers. He often said, "It looks like a park" which it did. In 2008, he followed her to Minnesota while she attended seminary, pursuing her call to parish ministry which he lovingly supported.
He lived according to old-fashioned values, believed you were only as good as your word and did it his way, without apology.
From childhood, John loved the outdoors. He was passionate about deer hunting and fishing, especially for big muskies, and recounting his adventures by telling the longest version of any story.
John was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mildred Harvestine. He is survived by the family he loved: his wife of 32 years, Jackie, and children Annie and Erik (Steph) Hanson, daughters Justine (Jason) Myers, Lindsay (Rob Stangler) Fischer, and Jessica Harvestine along with their mother, Florence Harvestine and her daughter Samantha (William) Sanchez and their son, Dakota. He is also survived by siblings George "Donnie" (Georgia) Harvestine, Arlene (Roger) Ihssen, and Joanne Svejda as well as grandchildren Ethan, Christian, Austyn, Kalyn, Keagan, and Easton plus several cousins, nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Sophie.
