John Paul "Jack" Mahoney, son of Dennis and Catherine (Murphy) Mahoney, was born October 10, 1916 on the home farm in Fairfield Township in Swift County, rural Appleton, MN. Jack was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith. He attended grade school at District 43 in Fairfield Township. When Jack was 12 years old, he played trumpet in the Fairfield Band. He later attended high school at the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, MN, graduating in 1934. After graduation, Jack farmed and did custom work of hauling grain and picking corn. On November 16, 1938, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Eleanor Lowry at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Clontarf, MN. They made their home at the Mahoney Farm in Fairfield Township and were members of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. Jack continued to nurture a growing custom business, and was also a Trojan and Golden Harvest seed corn salesman for 20 years and became a district representative for several years. In 1973, he semi-retired and moved into a home at 424 S. Haven in Appleton. While living in Appleton, they were members of St. John's Catholic Church, where Jack served on the Parish Council. In 1979, he permanently retired from farming and sold the house in Appleton. They moved into a new home at 14 Parkway Terrace in Morris, and rejoined Assumption Catholic Church. He has continued to live in Morris since that time. During their retirement years, they wintered for 15 years in Mesa, AZ. They enjoyed playing cards and dancing with all their many friends. Marjorie died on December 30, 1997. We will all fondly remember all the many stories and jokes he loved to tell.
