Funeral services for Juel Stenson of Morris, formerly of Hancock will be held Friday, August 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock, with Reverend Julius Miller officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
Juel Stenson, son of Andrew and Mina (Rosendahl) Steenson, was born at home on May 2, 1919 in Camp Release Township in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota. He was the youngest of 12 boys. Juel attended grade school at District #21 in Release Township and graduated from West Central School of Agriculture in Morris in 1938. Following his schooling, Juel worked for several businesses in Montevideo, MN, before entering the United State Army on July 17, 1941. He went to basic training at Fort Eustic, VA and later went to Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME, before being honorably discharged in November, 1945. On April 10, 1942 he was united in marriage to Helen Sloneker in Portsmouth, NH. To this union two children were born. Following their marriage and Juel's discharge from the service, they moved back to Montevideo; where he worked at Fasness in Watson and later ran a locker plant in Wegdahl and Maynard. In 1948, Juel joined his brother-in-law, Merrill Sloneker, where they owned and operated the Sloneker & Stenson Grocery Store in Hancock for 30 years, before selling to Pete Jensen. Juel continued to work in the store, while also driving school bus for the Hancock School District. Upon retirement, Juel and Helen enjoyed traveling and wintering in Yuma, AZ for 15 years. Helen died on January 9, 2011. Juel continued to live in Hancock, before moving to Sky View Court and later to West Wind Village in Morris.
Juel was an active member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock, where he served on various boards and committees. He was also a member of the V.F. W. Post 5249, the Hancock Legion and the Legion Post in Benson. Juel served on several boards while living in Hancock: Commercial Club, Sportsman's Club, Hancock Baseball Team, Pomme de Terre Baseball League and Lakeside Cemetery Association.
Juel died on Monday, August 17, 2015 at West Wind Village in Morris. He was 96 years old.
He is survived by his children: Gary (Judy) Stenson of Arvada, CO and Diane (Al) Herwitz of Littleton, CO; one granddaughter: Terri (Steve) Goodhue of Denver, CO; two great-granddaughters: Sara Jo Goodhue and Sydney Jae Goodhue of Denver, CO and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents and eleven brothers: Alf, Sam, Clarence, Art, Ansel, Edwin, Ted, Ingvald, Clifford, Orville and Morris.
