Katherine Bucher

The memorial service for Katherine "Kathy" Bucher, of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, with Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday at the Starbuck Funeral Home, in Starbuck from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday, one hour prior to services at the church.

Katherine Lucille Bucher, 93, passed away February 24, 2019, at Holly Ridge Manor in Starbuck, MN. She was born to Oscar and Laura Staupe on July 1, 1925, on a farm near the Norwegian settlement of Hatton, ND and was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hatton.

Kathy attended Hatton Public School and graduated in 1943. Upon graduation she moved to Fargo, ND and fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a registered nurse, earning her degree from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1946.

She married Foster Donald Bucher, her high school sweetheart, on August 3, 1947 and three years later the couple moved to Starbuck, MN, where Don opened a medical practice.  Starbuck has been their home the past 68 years.

Kathy was a devoted mother and wife and was very active in the church and community, volunteering as a nurse for the annual Blood Mobile drive, school vaccinations and the local hospice.  She organized the Candy Striper program for girls at the Starbuck Nursing Home and was a member of the Minnewaska Hospital Auxiliary and the Depot Society.  Kathy was proud of her Norwegian heritage and loved to wear her costumes for Heritage Days and serve Norwegian food at the festival.  She also enjoyed baking, entertaining, and playing bridge with the gals.

In their retirement years Kathy and Don lived in Sun City, AZ during the winters where they enjoyed socializing with their Minnesota snowbird friends.  For the last five years the couple has lived at Holly Ridge Manor in Starbuck.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Don, and her children, Foster (Cher) Bucher of Centralia, WA, Jane (John) Ramsey of Minneapolis, MN, Becky (Paul) Wigley of Lakeville, MN, and Fred Bucher of St. Michael, MN, six grandchildren: Matthew Bucher, Andrew Bucher, Sarah Bucher, Sarah Wigley, Dan Bucher, and Laura Bucher and one great grandchild: Oscar Bandholm Vinde Bucher. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Iver Staupe.
