Kenneth Johnson

The funeral for Kenneth Johnson Sr., of Donnelly, Minnesota will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, Minnesota. Celebrant for the funeral mass will be Father Stan Wieser. A rosary will be prayed at Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. followed by a visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Burial will be at St. Theresia's Cemetery, Donnelly.

Kenneth Johnson, son of Richard and Gladys (Wilts) Johnson was born on December 10, 1925 in Macsville Township near Herman, Minnesota, where he grew up and attended grade school. He later attended high school in Herman, before being drafted into the United States Navy during World War II, serving 2 ½ years on the U.S.S. Kimberly in the Pacific Theatre in Tokyo Bay. After being honorably discharged from the service, Kenneth returned home and began farming. In 1950, he attended Dunwoody Technical School in Minneapolis to learn welding and blacksmithing. He was united in marriage to Lois Hennen on September 18, 1952 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. The couple lived in Minneapolis where Kenneth worked at Minneapolis Moline in Hopkins welding in the parts plant. In 1956, the couple moved to Donnelly and Kenneth purchased a blacksmith shop. Kenneth also drove school bus and worked for the Stevens County Highway Department with the road maintenance crew, retiring in 1986. He continued to work in his blacksmith shop until 1995, retiring due to health problems. Kenneth entered the Fergus Falls Veterans Home in Fergus in March of 2012.

Kenneth was a life member of the V.F.W. where he served as commander of the post from 2003 to 2005. He was also a life member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. Kenneth was very active in his community, serving on the Donnelly Fire Department (serving as assistant chief for 3 years), Donnelly Rod and Gun Club, Donnelly Commercial Club and was a member for the Western Tri-County Horseshoe League. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing softball, fishing and attending all sports with family and friends.

He loved family vacations and taking many bus trips with Lois. Most of all Kenneth will be remembered for being a great family man who loved his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

Kenneth died on Friday, December 27, 2013 at the Fergus Falls Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, having reached the age of 88 years.

He is survived by wife, Lois, Donnelly; two sons, Kenneth (Deloris) Johnson Jr., Hillsboro, KS and Daniel (Julie) Johnson, Evansville, MN and one daughter, Kathryn (Phil) Batt, Claremore, OK; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harold and Hubert and two sisters, Mildred and Doris.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are given in Kenneth's name to the American Alzheimer's Association.
