LaVern Goodyear

June 21, 1923 — March 14, 2015

Memorial services for LaVern Goodyear of Starbuck will be held Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Indherred Lutheran Church near Starbuck. Reverend Paul Johnson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LaVern Reed Goodyear, son of Elmer and Dora (Verrips) Goodyear was born June 21, 1923 in Bancroft, South Dakota. He was baptized on April 12, 1925 in Bancroft. He grew up and attended school in South Dakota before moving to Boyden, Iowa where he graduated from high school. LaVern entered the United States Navy on January 25, 1944, serving in WWII. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1946. He was united in marriage to Joyce Van Dyke on February 18, 1947 in Boyden, Iowa. LaVern and Joyce then moved to a farm northwest of Starbuck, where they made their home and raised their son, LJay and two daughters, Sue and Cindi. LaVern continued to farm until his retirement. Joyce passed away July 5, 2007. He moved to Holly Ridge in Starbuck in the fall of 2010, where he continued to live until the time of his death.

He was a member of Indherred Church where he served on church council. He was also a life member of the Starbuck VFW and the Farmers Union Board. He enjoyed farming, cutting wood, reading and visiting with friends and family.

LaVern passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. He lived to reach the age of 91 years.

He is survived by his two daughters: Sue (Mark) Schumann of Glenwood and Cindi (Don) Peterson of Hopkins; four grandchildren: Creg Schumann of St. Paul, Jason (Kim) Schumann of St. Paul, Matt (Jesse Hughes) Peterson of Minnetonka and Alissa (fiancé Richard Kruegar) Peterson of Minneapolis; great-grandchildren: Reed and Brennan Schumann; two sisters: Darlene (Arnie) Femrite of Starbuck and Lori (Paul) Billehus of Starbuck. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Goodyear and son, LJay Goodyear.

Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
