Funeral services for LaVerne Barrie Westerlund of Morris, MN will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, MN. Father Todd Schneider will be officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday for one hour prior to services at Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Morris.
LaVerne Phyllis Barrie Westerlund, daughter of Perry and Alice (Rusten) Strommen, was born March 22, 1926 in Glenwood, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church in Glenwood, MN. LaVerne attended Glenwood High School for 11 years before she started working at Odegaard Department Store. On June 25, 1945, LaVerne was united in marriage to Lionel Barrie, whom she met at Lakeside Ballroom. The couple moved to Donnelly to farm until 1962. After they sold the farm they moved to Morris, where LaVerne worked at Bon Jos clothing store for several years. Lionel died on September 25, 1970 and LaVerne remained in her home in Morris until 1985, when she moved to the Brainerd area. In May of 2006, she married Dale Westerlund in Brainerd. The couple made their home in the Brainerd-Baxter area, where LaVerne worked at Bon Jos Clothing Store. Dale passed away in December of 2008 and LaVerne continued to live in the Brainerd area until December, 2013, when she moved back to Morris. She resided at Skyview Plaza before moving into Courage Cottage, where she continued to live until her passing.
LaVerne enjoyed dancing, playing cards especially 500 and Whist, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
LaVerne died on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Courage Cottage in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 88 years.
She is survived by two daughters: LuAnn (Dennis) RaDue of Plymouth and Linda (Lanny) Rohloff of Morris; five grandchildren: Kristin (Tim) Rosen of Plymouth, Amy (Kurt) Halstrom of Maple Grove, Craig (Kathy) Rohloff of Bennington, NE, Kevin (Liz) Rohloff of Playno, TX, and Stephanie Rohloff-Reese of Morris; 12 great-grandchildren: Lilia Rosen, Ani Rosen, Jonathon Halstrom, Lucia Halstrom, Andrew Rohloff, Anna Rohloff, Jacob Rohloff, McIntyre Rohloff, Addison Rohloff, Robert Rohloff, Morgan Rohloff, and Bradley Rohloff. She was preceded in death by her first husband: Lionel Barrie; second husband: Dale Westerlund; one sister: Elayne Christen; and one grandson: Lonnie Rohloff.
The family would like to thank Dr. Lunzer, Dr. Swenson, all of the staff at Stevens Community Medical Center, and all of the staff at the Courage Cottage for the care they provided for LaVerne.
