Leona Halbe

Funeral services for Leona Halbe of Morris will be held Monday, February 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, MN. Father Tim Baltes will be officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a Christian Mothers Rosary at 3:00 and a prayer service to follow at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Morris.

Leona Laura Scheelk, daughter of Otto and Martha (Steuck) Scheelk, was born June 17, 1922 in Leonardville Township near Johnson, Minnesota. In 1926, Leona moved with her parents to Baker Township near Chokio, MN before moving to Scott Township near Alberta in 1928. She graduated from Alberta High School in May, 1940. On January 29, 1941, she was united in marriage to Philip Halbe at the Assumption Church Parish House in Morris by Father Leo Revering. Following their marriage, the couple lived on the Halbe farm until March, 1985, when they retired and moved into Morris. In September, 1971, Leona began working at the UMM Food Service and retired from there in 1987. Leona and Philip enjoyed going to the Elementary, High School and College programs, concerts and sporting events that their children and grandchildren participated in. Leona and Philip celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1991. Philip died on August 5, 1995. Leona continued to live in Morris until 2008, when she moved to Willmar to be closer to her daughters.

Leona was a lifetime member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, where she served on the fellowship group, Christian Mothers Society, St. Michael's Mission Circle and Franciscan Associates. She was a member of the Stevens County Genealogy and Historical Societies. She served on the Stevens County Welfare Board and also was chairman of the Framnas Community Chest for several years. She did many hours of volunteer work at the West Wind Village in Morris. She loved to sew, quilt, crafting and visiting with friends and family.

Leona died on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the Bethesda Nursing Home in Willmar, MN, having lived to reach the age of 88 years.

She is survived by six children: Sharon (Dennis) Pillen of New Brighton, Carol (Obert) Gjerde of Sunburg, Michael (Judie) Halbe of Morris, Martha (Charles) Haupert of Willmar, Colleen (John) Uebel of Eagan and Steven (Jeanne) Halbe of Morris; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; son-in-law: Delroy (Kathy) Zimmerman of Fergus Falls; one sister: Florence Bremer of Morris; three brothers: Marvin Scheelk of Minneapolis, Don (Lois) Scheelk of Burnsville and Delroy (Dagny) Scheelk of North Port, FL; sister-in-law: Gladys Scheelk of Kansas City, MO and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; Philip; one daughter: Virginia Zimmerman on June 7, 2006; daughter-in-law: Nancy Kramer Halbe on August 15, 2000; her parents and one brother: Orville Scheelk on October 29, 1986.

Pallbearers for the service are all of Leona's grandsons. Josh Fischer will provide special music for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
