Leonard Rolland Wood, son of Walter and Lily (Moore) Wood, was born July 22, 1918 in Rolf, Iowa, where he grew up and began his schooling. He was baptized and confirmed on October 11, 1949 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in LuVerne, Iowa by Reverend Louis Wittenburg. Following his schooling, Leonard began farming. On June 2, 1940, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Hinz in Algona, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple lived and farmed in the Algona area, where they also raised their three children, Gary, Brenda and Dale. In 1958, they moved to Scott Township in Stevens County, where they continued to farm. In 1983, they moved into Alberta, where they have continued to live since that time.
Leonard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alberta, where he served as a trustee. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and cars. He also enjoyed going to auctions, fishing, mowing lawns and feeding the birds. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leonard died on Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 88 years.
He is survived by his wife: Dorothy Wood of Alberta; two sons: Gary (Elaine) Wood of Alexandria and Dale (Donna) Wood of Maple Grove; one daughter: Brenda Knopp of Benson; seven grandchildren: Cindy Domek, Darren (Lisa) Wood, Karla Wood, Jennifer (Tim) Sukke, April (Brandon) Larsen, Andrea (John) Reineck and Jason Wood; eleven great-grandchildren: Gavin Larsen, Victoria Larsen, Jacob Reineck, Cody Domek, Colin Domek, Kendra Sukke, Parker Sukke, Mason Sukke, Justin Wood, Zachary Wood and Tyler Wood; three brothers: Condol Wood of Marietta, Robert (Arlene) Wood of Burt, IA and Elton (Shirley) Wood of Whittemore, IA; seven sisters: Catherine Liest of Fort Dodge, IA, Dorothy Martin of Nashua, IA, Betty Von Bank of Milan, MO, Elizabeth Von Bank of Nevis, Elsie (Maurice) Eishen of Algona, IA, Bonnie Esser of Algona, IA and Mary Ann Reynolds of Peoria, AZ and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one infant grandson; son-in-law: Les Knopp; his parents; three brothers: Glen, Kenneth and Bill Wood and two sisters: Opal Welder and Examae Wood.
Pallbearers for the service are: Lyle Knopp, Bob McHone, Howard Nordin, Lee Groff, Phil Gausman and Larry Heintzelman. Honorary pallbearers are all of Leonard's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Karen Stahn will serve as organist for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
