LeRoy Ardell Lanning, was born on February 12, 1920 at home in Erickson Township in Renville, Minnesota, to Brador and Agnes (Krogstad) Lanning. He went to country school till the 8th grade. At the time, he went to help his parents on the family farm. On November 16, 1943, he married Deloris Rosaasen at the First Lutheran Church Parsonage in Renville. The couple lived on a farm north of Renville until 1951. They then bought the Rosby farm, three miles north of Starbuck and lived there till 1978, when they retired and moved to Manor Apartments in Starbuck.
LeRoy's spirituality shined through with everything he did; especially in the way he treated others. He was very devoted to his wife of almost 62 years, when she moved into the Minnewaska Lutheran Home. He visited her almost daily, except when he took a trip to visit his sister in Texas. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandsons, such as sitting in the passenger seat when his grandsons were learning to drive and giving them a history lesson of several counties at the same time. He also taught them to play cribbage.
LeRoy loved to play pool, hunt pheasants, read and play whist. He never missed watching a Minnesota Twins baseball game. He always said they needed him to tell them what to do.
LeRoy was president of the Pork Producers for six years in the 70's. He held several offices at Indherred Lutheran Church. In the 1980's, he took care of the card room, where he spent a lot of hours.
In 2003, LeRoy moved to Holly Ridge, where he loved to visit with old and new friends. He thoroughly enjoyed taking care of his plants and watching the birds eat at his feeders.
LeRoy died on Thursday, August 16, 2007 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, having lived to reach the age of 87 years.
He is survived by his only child: Debra (Terrence) Piekarski of Glenwood; grandsons: Patrick Piekarski (fiancAC.e: DeNae and daughter: Celia) of Moorhead and Mitchell Piekarski of Moorhead; three sisters: Marcella (Darrel) Reynolds of Dumas, TX, Clarinda Erickson of Mesa, AZ and Ardis (Eugene) Danger of Bloomington and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife: Deloris; his parents; one sister: Idella Abbas and two brothers-in-law: Richard Abbas and Ferdinand Erickson.
