Lester Charles Staples, son of Walter and Nettie (Kobbervig) Staples, was born on May 3, 1931, at his family home in Synnes Township, Stevens County, Morris, Minnesota. Les was baptized at the Reque Lutheran Church, rural Alberta MN on August 15, 1937 by Pastor C. N. Sandager. He was confirmed at First Lutheran Church, Morris MN on December 11, 1949, by Pastor Lowell O. Larson.
He received his elementary education at Rural District #58, in Synnes Township and then continued with high school at the West Central School of Agriculture (WCSA), Morris MN, graduating March 25, 1948. After graduation, he began farming on the family farm.
Les was united in marriage to Rosella Hoffman at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hancock, MN on September 9, 1956 by Pastor Elton Hallauer. Les and Rosella were blessed with their daughter, Kim. They made their home in Synnes Township until 1963, when Les began working for the USDA-ARS in Morris. They lived in Hancock from 1963 until they moved to Morris in 1967, where he continued to live until the time of his death.
Les was very active in his church, serving on the church council for 18 years and a member of the church Men's Club for several years. He was Charter Member #6 of the 9-F Sportsman's Club; Les was a very active member of the Morris Lions Club, including being Deputy District Governor and a Guiding Lion. Over the years, his hobbies included pheasant and deer hunting, trap shooting, fishing, playing cards and shooting pool. Les was an avid reader with his own library of favorite books, nearly all in hardcover. You could almost always find him reading a novel by Louis L'Amour, John Grisham or a good western.
Les and Rosella enjoyed travelling and were fortunate to go many places over the years, including Hawaii, Germany, an Alaskan cruise, as well as other cruises; they also spent many winter seasons in sunny Arizona. Les always looked forward to spending time with his family and many friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather; and he will be greatly missed.
