Lillian LuVerne Aaberg, daughter of Gilman and Clara (Berg) Aaberg, was born June 19, 1923 on a farm south of Starbuck, which later became part of the Glacial Lakes State Park. Lillian attended Country School District #59. Following her schooling, Lillian worked at many different jobs but was most proud of her 25+ years as a nursing assistant at the local hospital. On June 28, 1943, she was united in marriage to Arvid Flaten. Arvid and Lillian had no children but will be dearly remembered by nieces and nephews (for several generations), especially those in the Starbuck area, whose school and church programs, birthdays and special events were always attended by their dear aunt and uncle. The couple enjoyed more than 68 years together before Arvid's death on November 24, 2011.
Lillian was very social, loved sports, dancing at the old Lakeside Ballroom (where she met Arvid); played ladies softball; bowled and loved snowmobiling, family gatherings, friends and was active in Fron Lutheran Church. In retirement, Lillian and Arvid got involved with wood crafts, which meant traveling to crafts sales and camping, again meeting many people. Lillian enjoyed a large vegetable garden and flowers every year, the color green and will be remembered by many for her lefse and wonderful sense of humor.
Lillian entered the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in April, 2012, where she continued her social self in the many activities, until her last few days before her death on Sunday, March 8, 2015. She lived to 91 years and 8 months.
She is survived by one brother: Palmer (Joy) Aaberg of Starbuck; two sisters: Hilma Larson of Starbuck and Tina Hanson of Salinas, CA; sisters-in-law: Marlys Flaten, Marlys Hagert and Elaine Rain all of Starbuck and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; twin brother: Leroy; brothers: Clarence and Edward; triplet brothers: Russell, Wallace and Arnold; sister: Gladys and twin sisters: Doris and Dorine; a number of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nephews and a grand-nephew.
