Lily Hokanson

June 12, 1907 — November 28, 2005

Lily Mathilda Anderson, daughter of Martin and Oline (Lunden) Anderson, was born June 12, 1907 in Walden Township in Pope County, Minnesota. She was baptized on July 14, 1907 by Rev. O.L. Torvick and confirmed on November 5, 1921 by Andrew Olson at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Cyrus. In 1926, she graduated from Cyrus High School. She continued her education at the Normal Teachers Training School in Morris, where she graduated in 1927. She began teaching Country School in Pope County. On August 24, 1934, she was united in marriage to Walter Hokanson. The couple made their home in Morris, where they raised their four children. After the children were grown, Lily continued to teach school for several years in Hancock, rural Hancock and rural Donnelly.



Lily was a member of First Lutheran Church in Morris, where she was active in circle, bible study and teaching Sunday school. She was also a life long member of the Friendship Sewing Club. For many years she was a caregiver, sitting with patients at the hospital and in their homes. She enjoyed reading, singing, and cooking. She was especially known for her caramel rolls, lemon pie and lefse.



Lily went home to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, November 28, 2005 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, having lived to reach the age of 98 years.



She is survived by her husband: Walter Hokanson of Morris; daughter: Sheryl (Vernon) Eystad of Kensington; sons: Robert (Diann) Hokanson of Happy Camp, CA, Rolland (Joan) Hokanson of New Brighton and Steven (Randee) Hokanson of Morris; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one sister: Edna Dohmstreich of Cyrus. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Elmer, Oscar and Walter; sisters: Alma, Inga, Marie and Olga; grandchild: baby boy Eystad.



Pallbearers for the service are Lily's grandchildren: Tim Eystad, Tom Eystad, Tami Presler, Tony Eystad, Todd Eystad, Misti Hawkins, Dan Hokanson, Eric Hokanson, Matthew Hokanson, Kayla Nadig, Nikki Hokanson, Mitchell Hokanson, Paul Hokanson, Mark Hokanson, Jon Hokanson, Robert Hokanson, Scott Hokanson and Heidi Hokanson. Deb Mahoney will serve as organist for the service with Mary Huebner serving as soloist.



In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to First Lutheran Church, Missionary for a Day or the Stevens County Historical Society.
