The funeral service for Lorraine Larson of Cyrus, Minnesota will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus with Minister Minette Stalheim Johnson officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Cyrus South Cemetery, Cyrus.
Lorraine Faye Larson was born on October 10, 1944 in Madison, Minnesota. The daughter of Elmer Sr. and Artys (Loney) Anderson, Lorraine attended a one-room country school in Haydenville, Minnesota where many of her schoolmates were her siblings or cousins. After Haydenville, she went to school in Madison. Lorraine and her family moved to Cyrus in 1958, and she continued her education at Cyrus High School. She graduated in 1962. Lorraine was married to DeWayne Larson on October 19, 1963 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. The couple farmed south of Cyrus. This marriage was blessed with four children - three daughters, Laurie, Shari, and Nancy, and one son, Royce. In the fall of 2013, Lorraine and DeWayne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Lorraine was an amazing wife, mother, and partner in the operation of their farm. She also worked outside of the home at various jobs while her children were growing up. She worked at two local grocery stores and then for many years at KMRS/KKOK Radio Station in Morris. Lorraine was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served her community through her leadership in the 4-H programs at both the club and county levels. Lorraine also was an election official for New Prairie Township, which connected nicely with her interest in state, local, and national politics. In 1991, Lorraine suffered a stroke, from which she fully recovered. While recovering, she began working as a home health aide then as a nursing assistant at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. This work inspired her to attain her LPN degree at Alexandria Technical College in 1997. She worked at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home for over 20 years where she was loved by her residents and colleagues for her compassion, knowledge, and sense of humor.
Lorraine was a beautiful person who was loved by all who knew her. She knew her way around the kitchen and was a skilled baker, cook, and canner - gifts she shared generously with her friends and family. She was equally comfortable in her garden, where she planted vegetables, perennials, and aquatic plants. Lorraine was a voracious reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, and was interested in the world around her. One of Lorraine's other passions was traveling. She took many trips to Mexico with her husband and her children. She also traveled to the Bahamas, San Francisco, New York City, Florida, Arizona, Boston, Georgia, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, and Chicago. Lorraine was very excited for another trip to New York City this July with her daughters and granddaughters. Lorraine took great joy in her family and especially loved spending time with her six grandchildren – Ellen, Carly, Sophie, Joseph, Gracie, and Grant.
Lorraine suffered a massive stroke on April 20th, 2014 and died on May 10th at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. Lorraine will be dearly missed by her husband, DeWayne, of Cyrus; her daughters, Laurie (Dan) Smith of Elbow Lake, Shari (Paul) Clusiau of Keewatin, Nancy (David) Flom of Eden Prairie; her son, Royce (Lynn) Larson of Rock Creek; her grandchildren; her eight sisters, two brothers; and many nieces and nephews. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents.
