Lorraine, the daughter of Louis and Amanda (Mesenbrink) Melchert, was born January 28, 1920 in Fairfield Township. She married Henry Winkelman on January 5, 1938 and they initially farmed in the Moyer Township. During their marriage, Lorraine and Henry operated the Red and White grocery store in Benson, and then the Super Valu grocery store in Appleton. They also worked at Orton’s Our Own Hardware store in Appleton. After her husband’s passing in 1980, she continued to stay active with miscellaneous jobs. In 1992, she moved to Starbuck where she continued her love of gardening, fishing, sewing, and baking. Lorraine had a great interest in the genealogy of her family and she enjoyed staying in-touch with everyone, whether far or near. Throughout her life, she was a devout Lutheran.
Lorraine died Tuesday, February 17 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 89 years.
She is survived by son-in-law Eddie (and Millie) Spohr of Apple Valley, CA; three grandchildren, Scott (and Cary) Spohr of Irvine, CA, Todd Spohr of Santa Clarita, CA, and Stacy (and Austin) Hoyle of Santa Clarita, CA; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan Spohr, Erica Spohr, and Caleb Hoyle, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Karen; and her brothers and sisters, Fred, Albert, Adolf, Raymond, Leroy, Agnes, and Elna.
Pallbearers for the service are: David Melchert, Norman Hoffman, Martin Haider, Dennis Weiss, Daryl Winkelman, Don Joos, Ernie Gades, Dean Winkelman, Cecil Bahl, Dale Westdal, Larry Winkelman, Charles Spohr, Jack Burns and Robert Ruplinger. Monica Gosseling will serve as organist for the service with Joy Smith serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
Lorraine requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The American Cancer Society and/or the American Heart Association.
