Funeral services for Mabel Melchert of Morris will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. Reverend Dell Sanderson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Horton Township.
Mabel Maria Ella Beyer, daughter of Fred and Martha (Suckow) Beyer, was born September 18, 1917 in Marysland Township, near Holloway, Minnesota, where she grew up and received her schooling at District #97. She was baptized on October 18, 1917 by Reverend Hans Appel and confirmed on March 29, 1931 by Reverend C.N. Anderson at St. John's Lutheran Church in Moyer Township. Mabel worked several years on the family farm following her schooling. On December 11, 1941, she was united in marriage to Raymond Melchert. Following their marriage, the couple owned and operated Ray's Store on Highway 59 in Fairfield Township. When Ray died tragically in an accident in 1955, Mabel continued to run the store until the fall of 1959. She then moved into Morris, where she worked a variety of jobs to support her family, including Jergenson's Super Valu, Holiday Café and eventually at the University of Minnesota Morris in the food service department, where she worked until her retirement. Mabel has continued to live in Morris since that time.
Mabel was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Morris and the Morris VFW Auxiliary. She also volunteered at the hospital and the Senior Citizen Center. Mabel loved working with her hands especially sewing, embroidery, crafts and doing hardanger cross embroidery for baptisms at church. She was also a Master Gardener, where she entered many items in the County Fair over the years.
Mabel died on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at West Wind Village in Morris, MN. She lived to reach the age of 95 years.
She is survived by her children: Richard (Wanda) Melchert of Harvey, ND, David Melchert of Paynesville, Linda Melchert of Rochester, Wanda Friedrich of Rochester and Raymond Melchert of Minneapolis; two grandchildren: Hannah Friedrich (Eric Refsell) and Karl Friedrich (special friend: Leela Accetta); 2 great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Hazel Refsell and one brother: LeRoy (Beatrice) Beyer of Benson. She was preceded in death by her husband; infant son, Stanley Melchert; granddaughter: Lydia Friedrich; son-in-law: William Friedrich; brothers: Alvin, Raymond and Vernon Beyer and sisters: Leota Kaiser and Merle Cooper.
