Funeral services for Margaret Carlsen of Cyrus, MN will be held Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. Reverend John R. Smith will be officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Cyrus South Cemetery in Cyrus.
Margaret Ethel Jacobson, daughter of Clifford and Ethel Jacobson, was born April 12, 1939 in Lund Township in Douglas County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Evansville, where she attended and graduated from Evansville High School in 1957. Following her schooling, Margaret worked at a bank in Barrett. On October 7, 1961, she was united in marriage to Melvin Carlsen of Kensington, MN at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Evansville. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Farwell, Kensington and Morris, before moving to Cyrus in 1973. Margaret did bookkeeping for her husband's business, Blacktop Specialties. She later sold Avon and in 1986, she began working at the Cyrus Public School in food service. She continued doing food service at the Hoffman Good Samaritan Center in Hoffman and Luther Crest West Bible Camp. She then worked at the University of Minnesota, Morris, before retiring in 2003. Margaret lived at Touch of Country Assisted Living in Starbuck for 3 ½ years and the Prairie Senior Cottages in Willmar for a couple years. In May of 2010, she moved to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, where she continued to live until the time of her death.
Margaret enjoyed garage sales, taking pictures, scrapbooking, playing cards, bingo, sewing and especially decorating with snowmen during the Christmas season. She loved the time she spent with her family and friends. Margaret's grandkids were everything to her.
Margaret died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN. She lived to reach the age of 73 years.
She is survived by three children: Jodi (Tim) Jergenson of Morris, Jerry (Clori) Carlsen of Cyrus and Jill (Troy) Owen of Cold Spring; seven grandchidren: Kathryn Jergenson, Kendra Jergenson, Jarrett Carlsen, Sophia Carlsen, Jaelyn Owen, Janae Owen and Jenna Owen; one brother: Howard (Kathy) Jacobson of Evansville; two brothers-in-law: Allen (Cindy) Carlsen of Alexandria and Clayton Hauglie of Elbow Lake; two sisters-in-law: Beverly Larson of Kensington and Bernice (DeWayne) Hauglie of Elbow Lake; special friend: Kaori Yakumoi of Tokyo, Japan and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her infant twin, Myron and infant siblings, Kathryn and Harold.
Pallbearers for the service are Jerry Carlsen, Jarrett Carlsen, Robbie Carlsen, Greg Pieske, Tony Amborn and Davis Larson. Honorary pallbearers are Margaret's granddaughters: Kathryn Jergenson, Kendra Jergenson, Sophia Carlsen, Jaelyn Owen, Janae Owen and Jenna Owen. Karl Retzlaff and Diane Hanse will provide special music for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
