On Saturday, November 10, 2012, Marion Beck passed away peacefully at the age of 98 at the West Wind Village nursing home in Morris, Minnesota, while being visited by her daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Ron Max. She had been in residence at West Wind since June of 2012, moving there from her assisted living apartment at Skyview in Morris.
Marion was born on March 15, 1914, in Osakis, Minnesota, to parents George A. Robinson and Bertha Josephine Skuey. She was one of three children with both of her brothers, Marvin and George, preceding her in death. Her father was originally a miller at the grain mill in Osakis, and her mother was very involved with the Osakis Presbyterian Church. Later George and Bertha took over the Osakis general store that had been founded by Marion's grandfather, J.J. Skuey.
Marion graduated from Osakis High School as the valedictorian of the class of 1930. She then attended the St. Cloud Teachers College for two years returning to Osakis upon graduation. It was difficult to find a teaching position as a single person in the beginning years of the depression and she could only find part time work. At about that time Marion's brother, Marvin, brought home a young man for dinner "because he looked like he could use a good meal". Howard Harry Beck had come to Osakis from Montana to work for his brother Chris at a filling station. Marion and Howard were married in Osakis on June 12, 1935. Marion and Howard had two children, Barb and Ken, both born in Osakis. Marion continued to work as a teacher part time until finding a permanent position when Howard was hired by Otter Tail Power Company, and the family moved to Morris, Minnesota, in the summer of 1952, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Marion was widowed in 1983.
Marion loved teaching and was a fixture as a sixth grade teacher in Morris. She received numerous awards and recognition for her work including teacher of the year in the Morris School District. She was also a very involved member of the Federated Church where she served on committees and in leadership roles. After retirement she continued to play golf, a game that she and Howard enjoyed together. However, bridge was her greater passion, and she played in numerous bridge groups with treasured friends up until the last year of her life.
Marion was the matriarch and role model for her family. She is survived by both of her children, Barb (and her husband Ron Max) and Ken (and his wife Joyce Ersted); five grandchildren – Barb and Ron's children Kevin (and wife Peg), Mike (and wife Jennifer), Marc (and wife Michele), and Ken and Joyce's children Gwen (and husband Dean Collmann), and Ross; and eleven great grandchildren; Joe, John, Bridget, and Amy(Kevin and Peg), Hannah and Mitchell (Marc and Michelle), Cassidy and Colton (Mike and Jennifer), Jake, Hannah and Josh (Gwen and Dean).
In lieu of flowers, please make all donations in her name to the Federated Church in Morris, Minnesota.
