Marjorie Elizabeth Kjorstad passed away on February 9, 2011 at the Shorewood Group Home in Starbuck at the age of 60. Marjorie was born to Harold and Christie (Baukol) Kjorstad in Starbuck, Minnesota on August 6, 1950. Marjorie brought joy to everyone she met despite being born with Down's syndrome. She was a sweet daughter and sister who leaves us with many treasured memories.
She grew up outside of Starbuck on the family farm where she loved exploring the outdoors and was always followed by her faithful dog and cat friends. At the age of seven she went to live at her first school in Shakopee, MN till she was 13. She loved music and participated in programs which were a delight for her visiting family.
She was at the Cambridge State School before coming to live in Alexandria in 1971 at Project New Hope which became Prairie Community Services. During these years, Marjorie lived a rich and full life. She was an active member of this community, living in a group home, participating in Special Olympics, attending First Lutheran Church and many outings and vacations with fellow residents. She loved the water and would swim whenever she got the chance. Marjorie worked her entire life and retired three years ago from Alexandria Opportunity Center. Her favorite job was working in the cafeteria for the school district in Alexandria. Her love of music and singing turned to country music with a special trip with staff to Branson, MO to hear Garth Brooks live! Her last years were spent at the Shorewood Home in Starbuck, which she enjoyed very much. She was a lifelong member of Indherred Lutheran Church.
Marjorie will be missed by her siblings, Karen Reyes, Gilbert (Barbara) Kjorstad, Corinne Holder, and Debra (Arnie) Krulikosky. Members of the staff of Prairie Community Services, staff at the Shorewood Home in Starbuck, and her housemates Harvey and Jennifer will also sadly miss her. Marjorie was always a part of her family, however, her family is well aware of a larger world that she lived in and of which we only have had glimpses through the years. It is to all the people in this world that we, as her family, wish to thank for the care, joy and love they shared with our sister.
The family would like to request that in lieu of flowers any memorials be sent to the steeple restoration project at Indherred Lutheran Church in Starbuck, MN or the Shorewood Home, 624 E 2nd St. Starbuck, MN 56381.
