Martha Drewes

October 7, 2009 — October 12, 2009

Martha Beata Bertha Mumm, daughter of Oscar and Mary (Kruse) Mumm, born October 7, 1909 in Horton Township, Stevens County and baptized at Zion Lutheran by Rev. Pasche. Martha attended Vacation Bible School in the summer and Country School at District #20. She enjoyed school, her classmates, teachers and playing ball at recess. She completed eighth grade and would have liked to continue her schooling, but her family needed her to work on the farm. Martha was confirmed on May 27, 1923 at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. Ristow.

Martha was united in marriage to Otto Drewes on February 11, 1931. She then joined Peace Lutheran Church in Morris. Five children were born to them, Dolores, David, Keith, Wayne and Mary. Martha was active in all aspects of the church including Ladies Aid and Mission Circle.

Martha and Otto shared all the farm work. Martha saw to the chores when Otto was driving school bus and attending community and church meetings.

She lovingly cared for her family. She gave special birthday parties, kept a large garden, canning and freezing produce. She often sang her confirmation song, “Lord Take My Hand and Lead Me” as a witness to her faith. Otto and Martha’s main goal in life was to see that their children grew strong in the Lord.

Martha enjoyed neighborhood whist parties, Senior Citizen’s card parties and dancing. The family looked forward to her coleslaw, caramel rolls, desserts and raspberry jam, which she made until she was 81 years old.

Otto died in 1990 and Martha moved to the Grandview Apartments, Morris and in 1998, moved to The Villa, now called West Wind Village. She joined Zion Lutheran Church when she left the farm.

Martha died on Monday, October 12, 2009 at West Wind Village in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 100 years and 5 days.

Martha is survived by two daughters: Dolores (Wayne) Delp of Hancock and Mary Otto of Clearwater, FL; two sons: David (Frances) Drewes of LaCrosse, WI and Wayne (Lin) Drewes of Hawley; 11 grandchildren: Laurie (Phil) Kuehl, Jean (Mike) McLoone, Phil Drewes, Brian (Sue) Drewes, Jennifer Drewes, Matthew (Julie) Drewes, John (Ashley) Drewes, Katie Drewes (fiancé: Andy Miller), Alan Drewes, Greg (Fran) Otto and Clay (Andrea) Otto; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
