Marvel Maxine Hoppenrath was born on February 20, 1929 to Albert and Ella (Hagen) Hoppenrath at the county hospital in Redwood Falls, MN. She and her family lived in Belview, MN, where she obtained her education up until graduation in 1947. From there Marvel went on to attend Paul’s Hairdressing Academy in Minneapolis, graduating in 1948. During that same year Marvel would become a cosmetologist at a salon in downtown Minneapolis and a wife to her high school sweetheart, Jennis Allan Anderson.
The couple married on December 12, 1948 at Rock Dell Lutheran Church in Belview, MN and shortly after moved to Dekalb, Illinois, where they spent their first year of marriage. In 1949 Allan started working for Great Northern Railroad and the couple relocated to Dassel, MN. Then, in December of 1954, Marvel and Allan moved to Morris, MN, where they would spend over six decades together raising their family.
During their 72-year marriage, Marvel and Allan were blessed with five children. Marvel was an excellent mother and an even better grandmother and loved being called “Grandma Great” by all her great-grandchildren. She loved sharing her talents with her family. She was an excellent cook, baker, calligrapher, cake decorator, scratch artist, ceramics painter and dancer. One of Marvel’s favorite hobbies was square dancing with her husband. Not only did she love to dance, she also loved taking the time to design and sew her own dresses and matching ties for Allan. The couple took their love of square dance across the country and enjoyed dancing in many states, attending 29 national square-dancing conventions.
When Marvel wasn’t dancing with the Morris B Squares, she could be found volunteering at First Lutheran Church in Morris, participating in the Marvel Club, Morris Jaycees, and acting as a den mother in both Boy and Girl Scouts.
In the latter years of their marriage, Marvel and Allan would make Mesa, Arizona their winter home and spent over 25 years as snowbirds, enjoying the beautiful weather and the many activities the resort had to offer.
Throughout her life Marvel loved being a wife, mother, sister, grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma. Marvel passed away on October 1, 2021 at the age of 92 at The Legacy in Morris and leaves behind a family who loved her dearly.
