Marvin Duane Pederson, son of Helmer Sr and Serina (Aadland) Pederson, was born May 17, 1923 in New Effington, South Dakota, where he grew up and was baptized and confirmed at Ferkingstad Lutheran Church. Marvin attended and graduated from New Effington High School. In 1942, Marvin enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in WWII as a Staff Sergeant. In 1945, he received an honorable discharge. Following his discharge, he moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he worked at Fairway Foods and also met his future bride. On June 20, 1948, he was united in marriage to Rosalie Mold in Sunrise, MN. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Starbuck, where they raised their children and owned and operated Pederson's Super Market. Rosalie died on March 18, 1992. Marvin continued to run the Super Market, until his retirement in 1994. In 2005, he moved into the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, where he continued to live until the time of his death.
Marvin was a member of the Starbuck VFW, American Legion, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Son's of Norway and the Masonic Lodge in Glenwood.
Marvin liked to travel, running his business, playing pool and cards. He enjoyed music and entertaining, especially the piano, organ, harpsichord and the guitar. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Marvin died on Friday, May 25, 2007 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, MN, having lived to reach the age of 84 years.
He is survived by two sons: Richard (Deborah) Pederson of Brooklyn Park and Blaine (Karla) Pederson of Starbuck; ten grandchildren: Trevor Pederson (Kristeen Hammond) of Glenwood, Troy Pederson (Karla Stone) of Glenwood, Trent (Tracy) Pederson of Alamogordo, NM, Tricia Pederson of Starbuck, Sarah Pederson of Willmar, Andrew Pederson of Starbuck, Alicia Pederson of Starbuck, Kayla Pederson of Starbuck, Charity (Eric) Baca of Brooklyn Center and Cassidy Zimmerman (Rick Briggs) of Brooklyn Park; nine great-grandchildren: Austin Pederson, Dylan Walker, Mariah Walker, Jordan Pederson, Bailey Pederson, Peyton Pederson, Hunter Blakeman, Noah Briggs-Zimmerman and Zachary Baca; two brothers: Kenneth (Ethel) Pederson of Franklin, IN, Helmer Jr. (Nyleen) Pederson of Bloomington and three sister-in-laws: Marilyn Pederson of Minneapolis, Irene Pederson of Minneapolis and Esther Pederson of Duluth. He was preceded in death by his wife: Rosalie; one son: Ronald Pederson; parents: Helmer Sr. and Serina Pederson; three sisters: Martina (Gilford) Hill, Lenore (Ed) Moberg and Amy (Rolf) Lavik and six brothers: Theodore (Ethel) Pederson, Palmer (Alice) Pederson, Henry Pederson, Chester Pederson, Idan Pederson and Gordan Pederson.
Honorary pallbearers for the service are all who called Marvin friend. Monica Gosseling will serve as organist for the service with Brian Malley providing special music. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
