Mary Jane Barsness, daughter of Elmer and Dena (Aslakson) Barsness, was born March 20, 1929 in Walden Township in Pope County Minnesota. She was baptized in April, 1929 at Fron Lutheran Church and was later confirmed at West Zion Lutheran Church. Mary grew up in rural Hancock, where she attended country school and graduated from Hancock High School in 1947. On November 16, 1947, Mary was united in marriage to Lowell Russell Zeltwanger. Following their marriage, the couple began farming together and raising their two children. Lowell passed away May 5, 1986. Mary later moved to Alexandria, Minnesota where she continued to live until the time of her death.

Mary Jane loved the outdoors. For many years, Mary and husband Lowell had a trailer house at the Royal Oaks Resort on Lake Ida and also on Lake Reno in the Alexandria area. Many great times with family and friends were had there over the years. Mary Jane loved her yard and could often be found outside working on keeping everything looking perfect. She was an animal lover and over the course of her life had many pet cats and dogs. She would watch over the neighborhood pets and worry if they weren't taken care of properly. Mary loved people and was a great hostess and cook. She spent many years providing great hot dinners for anyone that was at the farm working at noon. Mary Jane was a very kind, caring lady who loved her family and friends.

Mary died on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Prairie Senior Cottages in Alexandria, having lived to reach the age of 84 years.

She is survived by two children: Duane (Sandy) Zeltwanger of Hancock and Donna (David) Pedersen of Alexandria; five grandchildren: Stephanie (Kerry) Berget of Hancock, Brodie (Jessica) Pedersen of Maple Grove, Jason (Nicole Logan) Zeltwanger of Hancock, Barrie (Carolyn) Pedersen of Rochester, and Brian (Melissa Grewing) Pedersen of Fargo, ND; and seven great-grandchildren.
