Melvin Burton Nelson, son of Walter and Bertha Louise Nelson, was born August 31, 1931 in Wyoming, Minnesota. He was one of seventeen children. The family remained in the Wyoming/Lindstrom area throughout Mel's childhood where he had his schooling. Mel was united in marriage to Audrey Evjen, on March 12, 1968. The couple resided in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Mel worked a variety of labor jobs. Mel's final position in his profession was a brick layer for Nelson Construction, where he worked with his brother until 1975 when he was injured. The couple lived in the cities until 1977, when they moved to Glenwood and lived on Scandinavian Lake. This is where Melvin truly found himself at peace. In 2006, Melvin and Audrey retired in Starbuck, Minnesota where Mel spent his last years.
Mel enjoyed gardening, was known as the "Hosta Champion" and also had a passion for growing apple trees. Mel and Audrey spent a lot of time traveling and vacationed to places such as Texas and Mesa, Arizona. Melvin also really enjoyed country western music and attended many cowboy shows. Christmas was his favorite holiday and he would take time to decorate the entire yard. Most of all, Melvin loved when his family would come and visit out at Lake Scandi. Melvin was a good companion to Audrey and a very loving grandfather.
