Funeral services for Mercedes Wiedmann, of Cyrus, will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock. Reverend Julius Miller will be officiating. A visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Brooten, Minnesota.
Mercedes Diane (Glittre) Wiedmann was born on June 27, 1935 in Lake Johanna Township near Brooten, Minnesota. She was raised by John and Inga (Hoff) Glittre on the family farm in West Lake Johanna Township, near Brooten. Mercedes was baptized at West Lake Johanna Church, in rural Brooten. She attended District #13 Country School and Brooten High School, graduating in 1954. After high school, Merce moved to Minneapolis, she worked at Northrup Seed Company and Midland National Bank. Mercedes was united in marriage to Kenneth Sorby on March 17, 1956 at West Lake Johanna Church. The couple made their home in Crystal and Brooklyn Park, where they raised their five children as well as foster children. Merce and Kenny moved their family to Brooten in 1972, and she began working at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Kenny passed away in 1981. Mercedes married Tony Wiedmann in 1985 and relocated to his ranch near Long Valley, South Dakota. The couple eventually moved to Morris and resided there until Tony’s death in 2008. Mercedes lived in Hallock for several years and she enjoyed the friendship of Harold Haugstad. Mercedes moved to Cyrus in 2022.
Mercedes was also known as Merce or Sadie, depending on when in her life you knew her. Merce was a caregiver throughout her life. She cared for her children, foster children, her spouses, and many others. Merce enjoyed reading, going out to eat, and she called her kids daily to check in on them.
Mercedes died peacefully on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris; she was 87 years old.
Mercedes is survived by her children: Diane (Larry) Smith of Minneapolis, Donald (Maria) of Eden Prairie, Daniel of Fargo, ND, Dean (Janice) of Buffalo, and Debra (Dave) Brown of Cyrus; 9 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include, Harold Haugstad of Hallock; step-children: Jerry (Barb) Wiedmann of Paynesville, OH, Thomas (Cheryl) Wiedmann of Luverne, and Terry Wiedmann of Merriman, NE; her sister, ViAnn (John) Fort of Chisago City; sister-in-law, Gandrud of Bemidji; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husbands: Kenneth and Tony; John and Inga Glittre; siblings: Gladys Glittre, Josephine Glittre, Palmer Glittre, Mildred Nikula, Olga Quade, Raechel Finder, Delores Fratzke, Richard Skinner, Dale Skinner; brother-in-law, Peter Gandrud; and niece, Karin Malmquist.
