Memorial services for Merle Farwell of Morris will be Monday, October 19, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris, with Reverend Dell Sanderson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Merle Walter Farwell passed away on Monday, October 12, 2015. He was the 4th son born to Mark and Agnes (Tomalla) Farwell on October 18, 1926, at the Farwell farm, which was a Scott Township, Stevens County homesteaded farm in 1883. Merle grew up on the farm and attended Alberta School, graduating in May, 1946. Merle served in the United States Army from May, 1951 to March, 1953. He boarded a ship in Washington State headed to Korea, when the ship was diverted to Alaska. He remained in Alaska until his discharge. Merle also served three years in the South Dakota National Guard from 1955 to 1957. Before and after his service time, Merle worked as a switchman for the Great Northern Railroad. He spent time working in Willmar and Sioux Falls, SD. He retired from the railroad and moved to Morris from Sioux Falls. He lived in Morris until the time of his death at West Wind Village. Nearly every year Merle returned to Alberta for several days to help his brothers with farm work, usually during the harvest season.
Merle was a lifelong member of the American Legion.
He is survived by two sisters-in-law: Ellen Farwell and Dorothy Farwell both of Morris; three nephews: Ray (Ann) Farwell of Alberta, Richard Farwell of Chokio and Randy (Sheri) Farwell of Moorhead; one niece: Rosemary (Randy) Heitmann of Lake City, SD and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his parents and three brothers: Howard, Lynn and Frank.
