The funeral for Michael M. Fluegel, of Alexandria, Minnesota formerly of Morris, Minnesota will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. Celebrant for the funeral mass will be Father Robert Kieffer. Visitation will be on Friday at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will be at a later date at the Calvary Cemetery, Morris.
Michael Marvin Fluegel, son of Marvin G. and Margaret (Christman) Fluegel was born on October 8, 1947 in Alexandria, Minnesota. His parents owned and operated a Chrysler Corporation Dealership in Dawson, Minnesota and Morris, Minnesota. Michael lived in Alexandria (1947-1949) and (2009-2013); Dawson (1949-1958); Willmar (1973-1974) and Morris (1958-1973) and (1975-2009). Michael attended Dawson Elementary School; St. Mary's Parochial School in Morris and graduated with honors as class president from the Morris High School in 1965. In high school, he lettered 8 times in wrestling, golf and football. He also was a member of the National Honor Society. Michael attended the University of Minnesota Morris, graduating with honors in 1969. At UMM he again earned 8 varsity athletic letters in football and golf and was named UMM's Honor Athlete in 1969. After graduation he served as a volunteer graduate assistant football coach at UMM, under head coach Mike Simpson.
Michael was admitted to the University of Minnesota Law School in the fall of 1970 and graduated Cum Laude in 1973. He subsequently practiced law in Willmar, Minnesota at the firm of Schneider and Neeser; before joining the firm of Giberson and Collins in Morris in 1974. Mike and Marty moved to Alexandria in 2009. Michael continued to practice in Morris with the firm of Fluegel, Anderson, Mclaughlin and Brutlag until his retirement in 2013. While coaching at UMM, Mike met the love of his life, Martha (Marty) (Schuelke) Fluegel. They were married in June of 1972 and had two sons, Matthew and Mitchell. Mike was a proficient and successful firearm and archery hunter, loved golf, fishing and the camping with his many friends. He served as president of the 16th District Bar Association, the 16th District Legal Ethics Board, Director of the Stevens Community Industrial Development Association and President of the UMM Golf Club. He was a director of the Pomme de Terre Golf Club for eight years and a director of the UMM Alumni Association.
Mike died on Sunday, March 10, 2013 in Alexandria, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 65 years.
He is survived by his wife, Marty Fluegel of Alexandria; two sons, Matthew (and spouse, Amollia) of Morris and Mitchell (and partner, Lindsay Bryda) of Minneapolis; two grandchildren, Cooper and Anastasia Fluegel of Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Kathryn Mary Friedrich.
Pallbearers for the service are: Rich Nodland, Gary Severson, Dave Battey, Rick Feriancek, Steve Eskra, Steve Herzog, Kurt Sieve, Dave Kjos, Paul Ersted, Roy Lende, Reid Lende, Warrenn Anderson and Erik Schultz. Josh Fischer will provide special music for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
